Local knowledge

Waves sits directly south of Rodanthe on the same swell-hungry elbow of Hatteras Island, and it catches essentially everything its famous neighbor does — northeast groundswell wide open, summer southerlies too. The difference is people: S-Turns concentrates the crowd, and a five-minute drive south usually buys you a bar to yourself.

Like all of the tri-villages (Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo), the bars move constantly and the best peak migrates after every blow. The oceanside cam makes the morning check easy before you commit to the drive down NC-12.
