Local knowledge

The elbow of the Outer Banks sticks thirty miles out into the Atlantic and catches nearly everything the ocean sends — northeast groundswell, southerly windswell and hurricane energy that misses the rest of the coast entirely. Deep water close to shore keeps more of that energy intact, which is why Buxton's bars break harder than anywhere else on the Eastern Seaboard.

The stretch by the lighthouse has hosted decades of East Coast surfing history. Fall is the season: hurricane swells, offshore west winds behind cold fronts, and water that stays surfable well into November thanks to the Gulf Stream sitting just offshore.
